At Cottesbrooke Infant & Nursery School, we are committed to helping children develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to thrive emotionally, socially and physically — now and in the future.
We follow the Jigsaw PSHE programme, which is used across the school from Nursery to Year 2. Jigsaw is a carefully planned, whole-school scheme that supports children’s mental health, emotional wellbeing, relationships, and personal development.
It covers six key themes across the year:
Being Me in My World
Celebrating Difference
Dreams and Goals
Healthy Me
Relationships
Changing Me
Each theme includes opportunities for mindfulness, reflection and circle time, and helps to promote resilience, empathy and self-awareness.
As part of our statutory curriculum, we also teach Relationships and Health Education, using the Jigsaw framework alongside the Birmingham Approach to RHE.
Children learn about:
Friendships and kindness
Families and different types of family
Healthy choices and good habits
Managing feelings and asking for help
Understanding how our bodies grow and change
These topics are taught in an age-appropriate, inclusive way that reflects the diversity of our school community. Any individual questions that arise are answered sensitively and in line with a child’s level of understanding.
Our PSHE curriculum supports our wider work on:
CUBS Values
Equality and inclusion
Mental health and wellbeing
Children’s rights (UNCRC)
Trauma-informed and restorative practice
We want every child to feel safe, respected and proud of who they are.
If you have any questions about PSHE or Relationships Education, please speak to the Head Teacher or your child’s class teacher.
Our PSHE curriculum doesn’t sit in isolation — it supports and is supported by the wider ethos and work of our school. You can find out more about how we care for the whole child here:
