✍️ Writing

Writing starts with mark-making in the Foundation Stage. As children’s fine motor skills develop, they learn correct letter formation and begin writing for different purposes and audiences, using phonics to spell words and building up their grammar, punctuation and vocabulary.
Throughout Reception and Key Stage 1, writing is taught through Read Write Inc, alongside high-quality class texts. Children learn to write with purpose, develop sentence structure, use grammar and punctuation, and begin to edit their own work.

They write stories, lists, labels, instructions, letters, poems and more — often linked to the high-quality texts they’re reading in class.

Across the school, we encourage children to:

  • Say their sentences aloud before writing

  • Use story maps and oral rehearsal

  • Apply what they know from phonics and reading

  • Take pride in their handwriting and presentation

Handwriting is taught explicitly, with children using a printed style in Reception and Year 1. In Year 2, they are introduced to joined handwriting through the Nelson scheme.
