๐ŸŽจ Art & Design at Cottesbrooke

At Cottesbrooke Infant & Nursery School, Art and Design is all about imagination, expression and creativity.

From Nursery to Year 2, children explore a wide range of materials and techniques to experiment, create and reflect โ€” developing confidence in their ideas and pride in their work.

๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ What We Aim to Do

Through Art and Design, we help children to:

  • Express themselves through visual, tactile and sensory experiences

  • Explore their own identity, feelings and ideas through art

  • Develop skills in using tools, techniques and a range of media

  • Look closely and observe details in the world around them

  • Explore colour, form, pattern, texture and space

  • Talk about their own work and the work of others

  • Learn about famous artists and makers, and begin to respond to different styles and art forms

๐Ÿงต How We Teach It

Children are given time and freedom to explore materials and express themselves โ€” both independently and with adult guidance. Lessons may include:

  • Drawing, painting, printing and collage

  • Working with textiles, natural materials or sculpture

  • Artist studies linked to class topics or cultural events

  • Opportunities to share and celebrate their creations

Art and Design is often linked with other subjects such as PSHE, History or RE, giving children the chance to make connections and explore ideas in creative ways.

๐Ÿ›  Connecting Design & Technology

At Cottesbrooke, Art and Design and Design & Technology are closely linked โ€” both help children to explore their ideas, develop practical skills and express themselves in creative, meaningful ways.

You can find out more about how we nurture creative thinking through our Design & Technology curriculum.
