Spelling

The teaching of spelling begins in early years with the introduction of phonics through the Read Write Inc programme. As children move through school, their phonic knowledge is developed along side learning different spelling patterns, rules and exceptions. Children are also expted to be able to confidently spell particular key words at the end of Reception, Year 1 and Year 2.

How we teach spelling at Cottesbrooke.

If you have attended one of phonics or spelling workshops in school you will be familiar with the stategies we use to teach children how to become confident and successfull at spelling.

The children build up the strategies they use as they move through school, this enables them to become fluent with each strategy.

Children in Reception will use the following strategies to help them spell;

  • Fred Fingers
  • Red Rhythms
  • Word Banks
  • RWI Sound Mats

Children in Year 1 will continue to use the strategies taught in Reception, alongside these they will also be introduced to the following strategy;

  • Syllables

Children in Year 2 will continue to use the strategies taught in both Reception and Year 1 and will also be introduced to 3 further strategies;

  • Dictionaries
  • Trying Lion
  • Mnemonics

You can find out further information about each of the stategies on the posters below.
