✍️ English at Cottesbrooke

At Cottesbrooke Infant & Nursery School, we want every child to become a confident communicator, a keen reader, and an independent writer.

We teach English through an integrated approach that includes:

  • Speaking and listening

  • Phonics

  • Reading for pleasure and purpose

  • Writing with confidence and creativity

🗣️ Speaking and Listening

From Nursery to Year 2, children are given regular opportunities to share their ideas, listen to others, and build confidence in using language. This includes:

  • Storytime and class discussions

  • Partner talk and group work

  • Role play and drama

  • Oral storytelling and performance

We teach children to:

  • Take turns and listen carefully

  • Make eye contact when speaking

  • Respond using appropriate language and expression

  • Use new vocabulary in real contexts

Our staff model high-quality spoken language throughout the day, making the most of every opportunity to talk with children and celebrate their contributions, however small.

in lessons, and throughout the school day.
