🔄 Transition at Cottesbrooke

At Cottesbrooke Infant & Nursery School, we know that change can be exciting — and sometimes a little daunting, especially for young children. That’s why we take great care to support children and families through all the key transition points during their time with us.

These include:

  • Starting Nursery or Reception

  • Moving from Reception to Year 1 (Early Years to Key Stage 1) or Year 1 to Year 2

  • Transferring from Year 2 to Year 3, usually to Cedars Academy

We work hard to make sure every transition is as smooth, positive and supportive as possible — with time to ask questions, meet new people, and get used to new routines.

🧸 Starting Nursery or Reception

We want our youngest children to get off to the best possible start.

We’ve created a short presentation to help you understand what to expect when your child joins us in Nursery or Reception.

✏️ Starting Year 1 or Year 2

Moving from Reception into Year 1 is a big step, and we take a gentle, gradual approach to help children settle into new routines and expectations.
Year 2 then builds on this foundation to help prepare children for the move to Key Stage 2.

We’ve created a helpful presentation to guide you through life in Key Stage 1.

🏫 Year 2 to Year 3 – Moving on to Cedars Academy (or elsewhere)

Most of our Year 2 children move on to Cedars Academy, which is just over the road from us. Although Cedars is a separate school with its own Head Teacher and governing body, we work closely together to ensure a smooth and well-supported transition.

Please note: This transfer is not automatic. Parents and carers must complete an online application via Birmingham City Council.

Cedars Academy has produced a welcome video for families:

If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s transition at any stage, please don’t hesitate to speak to your child’s teacher, the Pastoral Team, or contact the school office. We’re always happy to help.
